Terrible Lizards Chapter 4 Walkthrough: The Ascent

Chapter 4 of Terrible Lizards: the Crew Lift key in Cavern B, the final Dennis chase, the moving-structure climb and how to reach the ending.

Terrible Lizards Chapter 4 Walkthrough

Chapter 4 is the shortest chapter in Terrible Lizards and the only one that is almost entirely chase. It begins after the fourth fuse circuit in Chapter 3, climbs back toward the surface through the deepest part of the cave, and ends with the Crew Lift, DJ and Dennis. This page contains ending-level spoilers from the second section onward. The first section is safe to read if you only want the route.

The chapter's reputation comes from its final sequence. Players report frame drops and broken chase triggers on Xbox Series X|S during the moving-structure climb, and the 1.0.9 patch did not address every performance issue. If a trigger stalls, reload the checkpoint instead of trying to force the sequence.

The route to Cavern B

Chapter 4 opens in the lowest part of the cave, below the flooded electrical section. The route is vertical and linear: ladders, scaffold platforms, wall-run panels and a few collapsed walkways that serve as ramps. There are no fuse puzzles and no arena locks. The chapter wants you to climb.

The one objective that matters is the Crew Lift safety key in Cavern B. The lift itself is at the top of the ascent, but it will not move without the key. Cavern B is a side chamber off the main climb, marked by a wooden sign and a run of yellow paint. If you reach the lift and it does not respond, you missed the chamber; the route back down is short and the game does not lock it behind you.

Cavern B is also where the chapter's collectible density is highest. Sweep the chamber before you take the key. The collectibles page explains the amber threshold, and the achievement guide shows how few players finish these sets.

The climb

The climb is a sequence of moving structures: lift cages, hanging platforms and wooden beams that shift as you cross them. The platforming is more forgiving than Chapter 3 because the checkpoints are closer together, but the camera is more aggressive and the route is harder to read in the dark.

Three rules keep the climb clean:

  1. Jump on the upswing. Most moving platforms are on a fixed cycle. Watch one full cycle before you commit; jumping at the top of the arc gives you the most room to grab the next ledge.
  2. Use the ledge grab. The game catches your hands if you reach a lip, so aim slightly low rather than slightly high. Overshooting a platform is more forgiving than undershooting it.
  3. Do not stop on a beam. The final sequence is built around forward motion. Standing still to read the route is how most deaths happen; look ahead while you are moving.

The climb has no creature encounters until the lift. The tension comes from height and timing rather than from a predator. That changes at the top.

Performance on Xbox

The final ascent is the most demanding sequence in the game and the one with the most reports of frame drops and stalled triggers on Xbox Series X|S. Reloading the checkpoint usually clears it. Do not delete your save to fix a trigger that will not fire.

The Crew Lift and Dennis

Once you have the key, the lift takes you and DJ toward the surface. Dennis attacks during the ascent. This is the game's final encounter and it works differently from the earlier chases: you are not running through a level, you are climbing the outside of a moving lift while Dennis follows.

Broadly, the sequence moves through three beats: Dennis closes distance while you climb the lift structure, the route shifts onto the exterior beams, and you end up above Dennis before the game resolves the encounter. There is no weapon and no finishing move; position and timing do the work.

The mistake to avoid is trying to climb faster than the structure allows. The beams move on a cycle, and rushing a gap is the main cause of death here. Wait for the beam to come to you, then move. Dennis is scripted to stay close but not to catch you instantly, so the sequence is more forgiving than it looks.

Who is Dennis?

Dennis is the Paleo Pal mascot suit with the Dilophosaurus head, and also the entity that has been living under the park. The game does not fully explain the connection. The Dennis page collects the confirmed facts and the community theory that fits them.

After the lift

The ending plays out immediately after the climb. Jordan and DJ reach the surface, and the final beat is DJ recognizing Stella's car. The game cuts there. There is no choice, no alternate ending and no post-credits scene that changes the outcome. The ending explained page walks through the final minutes shot by shot.

Completing Chapter 4 unlocks "Finally" and New Game Plus. The achievement completion rate for finishing the game is 23.1 percent, which means roughly three quarters of players never reach this point. If you are reading this before finishing, the chapter is shorter than the rest of the game and the difficulty is concentrated in one sequence.

The New Game Plus page explains the four modifiers and how amber collection unlocks them. The bosses page puts the Dennis encounter in context with the Hybrid, Bronto and Allosaurus fights.

Chapter 4 checklist

  • Crew Lift key collected in Cavern B. The lift will not move without it.
  • Cavern B swept for collectibles. The chamber is the densest collectible room in the chapter.
  • Checkpoint reload ready. If a chase trigger stalls on console, reload rather than restart the chapter.
  • Story pages saved for after. The story explained page and the ending explained page assume you have finished.

Chapter 4 is the game's victory lap in structural terms: short, cinematic and built around one long climb. It is also the chapter where the story finally answers the question it has been asking since the parking lot. Whether the answer is satisfying is a matter of taste; the ending explained page separates what the game confirms from what it leaves open.
